Symposium on Resilience Research for Global Development Challenges
September 30, 2021 | 9am-5pm
October 1, 2021 | 9am-12pm
ENR2, University of Arizona
OVERVIEW
On Sept 30-Oct 1, the 2021 Symposium on Resilience Research for Global Development Challenges brought together more than 120 UA faculty, students, and researchers to share experiences and ideas on pressing global challenges such as climate change, COVID-19, and conflict. “Resilience” is an integrating and complex term that is conceptualized, researched, and measured differently by different disciplines. At its core, resilience is about individuals, communities, and societies being able to maintain, and even transform, in the face of strain. Building resilience is also elusive, and a diversity of ideas is needed to address the critical human environmental problems of the day.
In keeping with AIR’s tradition of a focus on solutions, partnerships, and transdisciplinarity, the symposium had two goals. First, it provided a forum to showcase UA research in order to be a stepping stone for new collaborations and learning around resilience. To this end, the forum hosted 40 presentations on diverse topics such as agroforestry; water, energy, and food security; psychosocial resilience; and remote sensing technologies for monitoring crises, as well as a workshop to discuss topics in more depth. Second, the symposium presented a view that external opportunities are in bloom, and that the University of Arizona is well positioned to be the go-to thought leader for research on resilience and development.
The symposium was convened by AIR International Programs, with support from AIR International Programs' affiliates: Office of Global Projects, Tango International, RII, and the Department of Anthropology.
PROGRAM
The first day of the symposium featured a keynote plenary, a panel on a global resilience research initiative at the University of Arizona, and flash talk presentations from participants. Portions of the recorded Thursday events are available within the schedule tabs below.
The second day included smaller workshops and only took place in person. Facilitators in collaboration with symposium attendees used the time to discuss key themes and potential avenues of collaboration and influence that could be pursued beyond the symposium.
